As controversy continues to heat up over whether Barack Obama is a "natural born citizen" and thus constitutionally eligible to be president, Fox News has declared that Obama is "a citizen of the United States."

The proclamation came yesterday by Fox News anchor Shepard Smith, who said:
"He has produced a birth certificate. It shows his mother gave birth to him in Hawaii. It is stamped and sealed by the state of Hawaii. It is confirmed and Fox News can confirm the president of the United States is a citizen of the United States. Period."

Smith never mentioned that typical citizens of the U.S. cannot run for president, but that only "natural born citizens" can, which has to do not only with the birthplace of a candidate, but also the citizenship of a candidate's parents.

He was reacting to statements by Christian evangelist Franklin Graham suggesting Obama should produce his long-form birth certificate that includes the name of a doctor and hospital of birth.
"Well, the – the president I know has some issues to deal with here. He can solve this whole birth certificate issue pretty quickly. I don't – I was born in a hospital in Asheville, North Carolina, and I know that my records are there," Franklin Graham said.
"You can probably even go and find out what room my mother was in when I was born. I don't know why he can't produce that. So I'm not – I don't know. But it's an issue that looks like he could – he could answer pretty quickly," he added.

In his report, Smith erroneously referred to Franklin Graham's famous father, Billy Graham, as "the late Billy Graham." Billy Graham is still alive at the age of 92.
In June 2009, WND reported that Smith referred to those questioning Obama's eligibility as "crazies."
"There are these crazies out there who want to pretend [Obama's] not a citizen of the United States, who want to pretend that his religion is something they see as in some way troublesome to them and all of us," Smith said. "And there is a group perpetuating this thought, and there is a culture to which you can attach yourself very easily through the Internet. ... We know it's absolutely – there is no truth whatsoever – zero – to any of those ideas, yet they live within the computer and they fester in people's minds."
