Q. Does not the Constitution give us our rights and liberties?

A. No, it does not, it only guarantees them. The people had all their rights and liberties before they made the Constitution. The Constitution was formed, among other purposes, to make the people's liberties secure-- secure not only as against foreign attack but against oppression by their own government. They set specific limits upon their national government and upon the States, and reserved to themselves all powers that they did not grant. The Ninth Amendment declares: "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people."

They demonstrated their new skills at the battle of Monmouth where Washington’s troops had slowed down General Clinton’s retreat from Philadelphia to New York. It wasn’t a win by any standards, but they proved they could attack British forces in the open without the advantage of surprise and hold their own. Yes, they had to retreat, but they still inflicted significant damages on the British’s baggage trains and rear guard with attack-and-retreat and flanking maneuvers. They might have inflicted much heavier damages on the British at Monmouth if it hadn’t been for the ill-advised, if not negligent commands of General Lee. Washington literally took over command from Lee and turned an almost certain rout into a draw."

And while her results were, um...mixed, it was definitely a fun and interesting process. (More on this experience in a post next week.)

Like me, most people test their mixed-breed dogs simply out of curiosity. Many mutts come from shelters and rescue groups where, although workers and volunteers do their best, a lot of background information isn't often available at the time of adoption. DNA tests can often shed light on our dog's ancestors, and thus, provide insight into behavioral traits, nutritional and exercise needs and potential health issues.

But now, some fed up landlords and property managers are using DNA tests to link dogs — and by association, their people — to 'unclaimed' poop in the neighborhood.

VA Cemetery to Veterans: The Word "God," "Jesus" are Offensive, no Longer Allowed: "The Houston National Cemetery has told veterans and volunteers alike that they can no longer use the word 'God,''God bless,' or 'Jesus' at any and all funerals or condolence cards. The word has been deemed 'offensive.'

That is according to local volunteer and veterans groups that work at the cemetery. They are now suing the Cemetery in federal court so that they can use the word God.

To cite one specific example given in the suit, the director of the cemetery, Arleen Ocasio commanded volunteers never to use 'God bless you' and 'God bless' ever again at the cemetery.

Cheryl Whitfield, founder of Houston National Memorial Ladies, could not simply stand by. 'I could've kept my mouth shut and let things happen, but when it comes to standing up for your belief in God and giving comfort to the families, I don't want to regret not saying anything,' she said. 'We all had to stand up for what we believe in.'

Specifically, the suit brought against the cemetery and the Department of Veterans Affairs states that there has been 'a widespread and consistent practice of discriminating against private religious speech.'
