PORTLAND, Maine -- A majority of Americans believe the nation needs a third major political party, according to the results of a new Gallup poll.
Fifty-eight percent of Americans believe a third major political party is needed because the Republican and Democratic Parties do a poor job of representing the American people.

The number of people who said the parties are doing an adequate job was 40 percent.
Independents have always been most supportive of a third party, with 68 percent saying as much in the latest poll.

But a significant party gap was recorded in the poll, with 52 percent of Republicans favoring a third party, compared with 33 percent of Democrats.
