Just twenty or so years ago, Barack Obama wouldn’t just have supported the Occupy protests.

He would have organized them.
From Stanley Kurtz’s essential Radical-in-Chief: Barack Obama and the Untold Story of American Socialism, pp. 117-8:

In fact, Obama personally helped plan one of UNO’s most confrontational actions of the eighties [in 1988]: a break-in meant to intimidate a coalition of local business and neighborhood leaders into dropping a landfill expansion deal. 

We know of Obama’s involvement in this demonstration only because his supporters in 2008 felt it necessary to rebut charges that, contrary to his claims of inter-racial healing, he had organized exclusively with blacks. Only then did Obama’s former colleagues from UNO [United Neighborhood Organization, a largely Mexican group] of Chicago reveal that he had helped to plan and lead this multi-ethnic demonstration against landfill expansion on Chicago’s South Side. 

…Shouting “No deals!” somewhere between eighty and a hundred UNO-DCP [Developing Communities Project, a black group organized by Obama] marched to a local bank. There they broke into a meeting being conducted by the bank president and local community leaders. 
The group was exploring the possibility of a deal with Waste Management. 
The protestors, presumably including Obama, surrounded the meeting table while [Mary-Ellen] Montes [of UNO] told the negotiators, “We will fight you every step of the way.”

JFK encouraged and assisted Hollywood in the making of "Seven Days in May," a fictional account of a military coup in the US.  Kennedy wanted this story to be told. He thought the American people needed to be alerted to the threat to democracy posed by the military.

No one knows what went on in his head, but it is reasonable to conclude that  he felt this was a real and important threat.

 Robert Parry has written that Obama had a "Seven Days In May moment", meaning that he felt the threat of a military coup, when he began trying to withdraw troops from Iraq.

In his 1850 Disquisition on Government, John C. Calhoun argued that a written constitution would never be sufficient to contain the plundering proclivities of a central government. Some mechanisms for assuring consensus among the citizens of the states regarding "federal" laws would be necessary. Consequently, Calhoun proposed giving citizens of the states veto power over federal laws that they believed were unconstitutional (the "concurrent majority"). He also championed the Jeffersonian idea of nullification. To Calhoun (and Jefferson), states' rights meant that the citizens of the states were sovereign over the central government that they created as their agent, and could only be so if such mechanisms — including the right of secession — existed.

Without these political mechanisms the forces of nationalism, mercantilism, and political plunder would relentlessly reshape the Constitution with their rhetoric, and their efforts would eventually overwhelm the strict constructionists. At that point the Constitution would become a dead letter.

The slippery slope is here. When does it end? How many more infringements on our liberties, our property, and our basic human rights to travel freely will it take before people become fed up enough to demand respect from their government? Anyone watching the main stream media heard pundits and anchors waxing on the gravitas attribute of William Jefferson Clinton over all others. The term survived well into the Bush and post 9/11 years, where the media at times accused George W. Bush of not only lacking gravitas but in later years as metaphorically “spiking the football,” such as with his ill-advised but non-offensive “mission accomplished” speech aboard an aircraft carrier.

Martial Law Is Next! by Gary D. Barnett: According to the National Police Misconduct Statistics and Reporting Project, the police commit more violent crimes of assaults, sexual assaults, murder, and fatal excessive force, per capita than the rest of society. Those who are commissioned to "protect and serve" do nothing of the kind. Given that the numbers of police crimes reported are in my opinion far undercounted, the problem is much worse than is imaginable.

We are all now subject to search and seizure without warrant. We are subject to groping, sexual assault, and radiation by the TSA. Our homes can be invaded, and our pets or family members killed without cause. The advent and acceptance of the Taser has allowed the state’s gendarmes to brutally inflict pain, suffering, and sometimes death to anyone they choose, and usually without consequence.

And now, these same tactics will be used on our roads and highways, which means that lowly citizens across the entire country will be accessible to these hoodlums.

The heroic management of WBAL Radio stood by Ron, and it paid off: nearly all of the audience returned once it became glaringly obvious that Ron was right about the war all along, and that the entire nation had been neo-conned (and continues to be).

And then, of course, there are all the liberal intellectuals, college professors, misguided idealists and pundits in the press who honestly believe government has a moral imperative to feed, clothe, house and educate everyone in need — with your money.

Don’t forget about the politicians who learned long ago that robbing Peter to pay Paul will always ensure them of Paul’s vote. Sadly, for the reasons I just enumerated, there are a lot more Pauls than there used to be; and there are a lot more politicians willing to pander to them, for the power and pelf they get as a result.

Whatever the difficulty of achieving that change, it is not without support in legal circles. “Perry’s idea has been advanced by me and numerous other academic critics of the court,” said Paul D. Carrington, a law professor at Duke. “On this point he is absolutely right.”

Mr. Perry also discussed allowing Congress to override Supreme Court decisions by a two-thirds vote. Assuming that the power of judicial review established in Marbury v. Madison in 1803 continues to be accepted, this too would require a constitutional amendment.

But the Marbury decision, which gave the Supreme Court the last word in interpreting the Constitution, has its critics. Mr. Gingrich, for instance, told the Values Voter Summit in October that “judicial supremacy is factually wrong, it is morally wrong and it is an affront to the American system of self-government.”

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: Doug: That's all true, although George Bush Jr. arguably had the potential to be an even worse president. At least Lincoln was intelligent and articulate. Baby Bush was stupid, evil, pig-headed, thoughtless, and hugely destructive.

L: So, was Bush Jr. worse than, say, Obama?

Doug: I'm not sure — Obama could be worse. He's smart and persuasive, like Lincoln, which makes him very dangerous, because his ideas are totally destructive. He's not just doing all the wrong things, but exactly the opposite of the right things — and not just economically, but in every field. Obama could well be the president who pushes the U.S. over the edge.

One major problem is that people conflate a president's style and personality with his quality as a leader. An example of that is Teddy Roosevelt. He was athletic, personally brave, a great outdoorsman, a prolific writer, something of an intellectual — the kind of guy who would make for an altogether amusing dinner guest. But he was also a militarist, an imperialist, and a complete economic fascist. Teddy the Trust-Buster, popularized the idea that business is evil from his "bully pulpit." He gets an A for charisma and style, but an F— if you value peace, prosperity, and liberty.....

Doug: Ron is a decent human being. I’ve met him on a number of occasions, mostly when he came to meetings of the Eris Society, and always found him to be philosophically sound, as well as pleasant and sincere. A genuinely likable guy. As far as I’ve observed, he’s always done exactly what he’s said he’d do – certainly when it comes to voting against almost everything.

But if you’re asking if he’s got a chance of becoming president, I’ll skip the “Slim and none” joke, and just say not a chance. The proverbial snowball in the mythical hot place has better odds.....
