The Obama Administration's Anti-Oil Agenda

"I'm just going to be honest with you. There's not much we can do next week or two weeks from now," President Obama said on Wednesday, as he anticipates the pending doom of $4 a gallon gasoline.

But the fact is, the Obama administration previously called for $7 a gallon gasoline. Two years ago, Obama's Energy Secretary Steven Chu wanted to "figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe," which at the time were over $7 a gallon.

This is not just a public statement but also a result of anti-oil government policies over the past couple years. A blog by the Heritage Foundation outlined many areas in the Obama administration that have contributed to increased oil prices:

-Immediately after taking office in 2009, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, canceled 77 leases for oil and gas drilling in Utah;

-The EPA announced new rules mandating the use of 36 billion gallons worth of renewable fuels (like ethanol) by 2020;

-This summer President Obama needlessly instituted, not one, but two outright drilling bans in the Gulf of Mexico;

-After rescinding his outright offshore drilling ban, President Obama has refused to issue any new drilling permits in the Gulf, a policy that the Energy Information Administration estimates will cut domestic offshore oil production by 13% this year;

-Interior Secretary Salazar announced that the eastern Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic coast, and the Pacific coast will not be developed, effectively banning drilling in those areas for the next seven years;

-The Environmental Protection Agency has announced new global warming regulations for oil refineries;

-Interior Secretary Salazar announced new rules making it more difficult to develop energy resources on federal land.

Of course, these policies, and the anti-drilling, anti-oil propaganda may vanish now that Obama is decreasing his chances of a 2012 presidency. A poor economy -- which high oil prices may have a further impact on -- is not exactly a good campaign contributor.

For much of President Obama's term, White House aides were convinced the main barrier to his reelection was the worrisome unemployment rate. But even as the economy bounces back, a new political obstacle has emerged: rising gas prices.

Trying to defuse the issue, the White House has arranged a slew of speeches and public events to reassure Americans that Obama has a plan for cutting gas prices.

On Wednesday, Obama flew to Pennsylvania — for a town-hall-style meeting devoted to energy. He travels Friday to Indiana, another important state on the election calendar, where he will appear at an event in Indianapolis also focused on high oil prices.

"It's on the minds of a lot of people right now because you're paying more at the pump. Anybody notice that?" Obama told workers at a wind turbine plant outside Philadelphia. "For a lot of people, money was already tight before gas prices started climbing."

Obama's attention to the issue comes amid new polling that has implications for the presidential race. With the economic recovery gaining momentum, fewer people say they are jittery about losing their job. But a growing percentage cites rising gas prices as a chief concern.

The Pew Research Center is coming out with a report this week showing a majority of Americans say gas prices have a "substantial impact" on their household financial condition.

"The bottom line is, unless gas prices go down, it puts the president in mortal peril," said Douglas Schoen, a former consultant to President Clinton. "Every American faces higher gas prices every day, so in a certain sense, it has the likelihood of being a more serious problem than the unemployment rate, because 9% are unemployed but 100% of the American people have to deal with the impact of rising fuel prices."

(CNSNews.com) - At a gathering in Pennsylvania Wednesday, President Obama told a man who questioned him about rising gas prices to think about trading in his gas guzzler for a vehicle with better mileage.

With demand for oil contributing the price hike – and on top of that, the upheavels in the Middle East making folks "nervous" -- President Obama said there are three things the U.S. can do – but nothing that will work in the next few weeks.

One solution, he said, is to increase U.S. oil production. But, he added, "We can't just drill our way out of the problem. And that's why the second thing we can do is increase efficiency on cars and trucks, which is where most of our oil is used."

Obama said the third step is to "start looking at electric cars, and maybe natural gas cars, so that we're not just using petroleum to power our vehicles."

Addressing the questioner, Obama conceded, "None of that is going to help you this week, though. So, like I said, if you're getting eight miles a gallon you may want to think about a trade-in. You can get a great deal. I promise you, GM or Ford or Chrysler, they're going to be happy to give you a deal on something that gets you better gas mileage."

  This morning I wrote a post about a Homeland Security paper that warned about "right wing extremists" and the threat that they may pose to the government.

  This paper basically lumped in people who are either pro second amendment, anti abortion, anti illegal immigration, or pro smaller government (or more than one or all of the above)  with white supremacists and domestic terrorists. As maddening as I found that paper there was one aspect to the paper that I missed this morning and to me it is much more egregious.

  This is what the Department of Homeland Security thinks about our military men and women who are overseas fighting on our behalf:

the return of military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks

  That is unforgivable. To suggest that some of our troops will come home and form or join terrorist groups is beyond reprehensible. And why suddenly is the Department of Homeland Security suddenly using the "T" word again when talking about our troops when they refuse to call the actual terrorists what they are?

What's this? Did Barack Obama only attend Columbia University for nine months?

That was the suggestion of a report obtained from the Student Clearinghouse by eligibility gadfly Orly Taitz, an attorney who has represented a number of clients in legal challenges pertaining to Obama's bona fides.

But according to information obtained by WND, it appears Obama did indeed attend Columbia for two years.

The concerns were raised in a document filed in court as part of an amended complaint in a case Taitz has assembled challenging the legitimacy of Obama's Social Security number. The case alleges Obama has used multiple Social Security numbers and the number he reportedly uses today is a Connecticut number, even though Obama lacks links to the state at the time he would have gotten the number.

Earlier on Wednesday, Glenn Beck's website TheBlaze.com broke the news that Beck show would be eventually phased out of the Fox News Channel's lineup.

On his Wednesday afternoon show, Beck explained to viewers the reason behind his departure and admitted some other things about the content of his character.

"I want to take a couple of minutes and address something personal between you and me," Beck said. "This is something that, something that I have been thinking about for a very long time. When Fox was generous enough to offer me the time at 5:00, I originally didn't take them up on it. I turned them down. One reason – I didn't want to do this. I hated doing it at the other place. This place is sweet in comparison. But I also knew — believe it or not, anybody who knows me in my real life, as the wee little Erin will tell you, too – I avoid on confrontation like nobody's business. That's why I'm forced, but also I don't like it. I don't like conflict, but sometimes you have to stand."

Beck's ratings had come off their highs from 2009 and the Fox News host had come under fire from the likes of lefty outlet, particularly Media Matters. However, Beck explained the Fox News show was never meant to be permanent.

"I took the job two years ago because I thought I had something important to share," he continued. "I really thought if i could prove my case that something wicked this way was coming, something in America was wrong, America would listen. And they have. I'm surprised at both the number that have and haven't, even with all of the facts. When I took this job, I didn't take it because it would be a career for me. Paul Revere did not get up on the horse and say, 'I'm going to do this for the rest of my life.' He didn't do it. He got off the horse at some point and fought in the Revolution. And then he went back to silversmith-ing."

He went on to explain he would still be appearing on Fox News.

"If you have watched this program, if you really, I ask you at times hear me," he continued. "You know what I believe is coming. If you watch tonight's show, I believe you know that I believe we're heading into deep and treacherous waters. It bothers me to be entering this phase and feel as though you might say, 'Wait, wait, wait, wait.' I've been very clear with you. I played my cards face up. We will find each other. I'm developing other content for Fox – there's specials and other things, on television and beyond. I will continue to tell the story and I'm going to be showing other ways for us to connect, but I have other things to do."

Congressional negotiators raced against the clock Wednesday to reach a deal to fund the government for the rest of the year.

As Democrats and Republicans continued to bicker publicly over who is responsible for the weeks-long stalemate over the 2011 budget, senior aides to House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) and Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) made progress in private talks, raising hopes for at least the broad outlines of a pact by week's end.

The two leaders then spent nearly 90 minutes Wednesday night in the White House with President Obama, who told reporters in a very rare late-night briefing that progress was made but no deal was yet at hand.

"I remain confident that, if we are serious about getting something done, we should be able to complete a deal and get it passed and avert a shutdown," Obama said. "But it's going to require a sufficient sense of urgency from all parties involved."
